Question by : How dificult would it be to install a Garmin 1000 into an older Beech 18?
Assuming one could afford it, how difficult would it be to install a Garmin 1000 into a Beech 18? Would you have to have Garmin install it because it’s so secretive? And if so, would they?

1) All Beech 18′s are “older”
2) Difficult is spelled with 2 f’s
3) No, Garmin doesn’t have to do the installation themselves but an authorized installer is required.
4) It’s a big job, but not worse than retrofitting many other older aircraft from a technical standpoint
5) The aircraft would require a supplemental flight certificate, which would be a huge headache to get..
6) Why would you want to?

Garmin only allows the G1000 to be installed into new aircraft or specific aircraft they have approved it to be installed on. So the difficulty would primarily be legalities.
However they do offer the G600 and G500 for installation in other aircraft. Either the Beech 18 would be covered under a blanket STC, or you would have to apply for an LSTC (or whatever is equivalent in your country) to install it. Then it would just be fabricating a new panel to house it and relocating any other required instruments and finding a place to install the other components of the package.
As far as it being worth it, if you’ve got money to blow why not? 18s will be around for a long time. If it was a pristine unmodified version I would hesitate but if it is one that has turbines or tricycle gear or on floats (where glass can be very handy) then for sure.
I probably wouldn’t suggest it unless your a licence avionics technician .
