5 Stars Great bike computer with cadence
It took a good amount of searching before I was able to find the Vetta RT277, which also has cadence and under $30. I didn’t want a wireless bike computer because many have reported the transmission isn’t that good and for me, more batteries to replace. I also like the wired RT2xx series computers because of the thicker, steel braided wiring. The wiring should hold up better against damage if it’s snagged.

The installation on the RT277 is very straight forward and it comes with a spacer to properly align the sensor and magnets. Also included are rubber mounts that are flat and offset depending on where the computer will be attached on the handle bars, along with zip ties and tape for the wiring (they don’t recommend using zip ties on the wires), plus a clear (spare) cover for the computer.

I’m using it on a ‘08 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR. The speed sensor for the wheel spoke magnet is too far spaced from the chainstay on the SJ FSR. I used a sticky rubber feet (similar to the sticky felt circles, normally used items to prevent surface marring) on the chainstay to get the speed sensor closer to the wheel spoke magnet. One thing to check for before zip tieing the cadence and speed sensor is identifying which one is which. The sensors are not labeled. Take one of the magnets and make a few passes over the sensor to identify it. Aside from the manual neglecting to mention which sensor is cadence and speed, this is an excellent computer with the cadence feature.

Feature wise, the computer has the usual: current speed, average and max speed, indicators if you’re above or below your average speed, tripometer, odometer and ride timer. Being a cadence computer, it also has current, average and max cadence. It has service or maintenance reminders either based on ride time or distance (handy for maintaining suspension components). It also has lap functions to track time or training purposes–I haven’t used this feature though, mainly bought it for speed, distance and candence functionality.

1 Star POS
I have had this for several months and still can not get the cadence to work. Don’t waste your money on this POS.

Update – After numerous emails with the mfg’r and the total lack of function of the unit, they finally agreed to replace the unit. Waiting for their response with a non functional unit and about to go on a trip, I bought a Cateye with cadence and it works fine. So much for Vetta. Now let’s see if I can get my money back.

1 Star Someone tell us how to buy a good bike computer please.
The Vetta RT277 is a bike computer that provides cadence, still can’t get it to work right, and distance and speed (all ok here). I use this on a trainer in my basement…that is proabably all I would recommend it for. IF you plant to use it on the road, buy your own plastic zip ties. The ones that come with the computer are about as cheap and poorly put together as the instructions and the device itself. Altogether, it works but I’m relatively disappointed with the quality of engineering and thought into actual installation and use that went into this device.

5 Stars Great cyclecomputer
This computer works great. The wiring for the pickup is even long enough to mount the wheel speed on the rear wheel. I was using a wireless computer and having trouble with interference and false readings…this is leaps and bounds better!

4 Stars Vetta RT277
The installation was more complicated than any other cadence computer I have ever installed. The heavy duty cables are unwieldy, and the separate runs to the chainstay and seatstay add effort. Even the positioning of the magnets seemed finicky. I was doing two bikes, and it took hours before I was satisfied.

BUT, once everything is in place, the operation of the computer is great. Because the top and bottom rows can show any of the data, there’s lots of choice as to what is shown.

The ability to get different colored cases from Vetta is a nice feature.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great! High quality, strong transmitter, excellent customer service.
I’ve been using various bike computers for a while, and have had VDO’s elevation-measuring MC1.0+ for about 5 years. More recently, I needed a more basic computer for my commute bike that could do double duty on our tandem, mounted on the stoker’s handlebar.

At first it appeared wireless wouldn’t cut it for the long transmission range needed for the tandem, but then I found a few folks who reported success with the digital transmission of VDO’s DS-series computers. Sure enough, this computer works like a charm! No ugly wires running half way across the bike, either.

The functions are basic (no altitude, cadence or heartrate on this model), but it features 2 wheels sizes for use on two bikes (I’ve since moved it off my 16″ folding commute bike and onto my wife’s 29″er, since she’s the primary user of it on the tandem), plus all the usual average / max speed / timing features.

A word about VDO’s customer service: Excellent. I’ve had no problems with this unit, but had an off-trail experience with my MC1.0+ which caused a small button part to become lost. I emailed my problem to VDO, and within a couple of days, I had an envelope in my mailbox, postmarked from Germany, that MORE than took care of my problem. Truly awesome!

It’s good to have the option of a quality product such as this. It truly stands out among the usual brands, and is superior to the $20 and $30 “house brand” computers sold by many online retailers.

1 Star Don’t Make a Terrible Mistake
I have used various cycle computers for more than 20 years. In that time I can honestly say this is the worse computer I ever purchased. For the money you are getting features that can be had for at least twenty dollars less. You can also be assured that the cheaper computer will work better than this abysmal product. After three months of poor performance this computer earns two thumbs down. Accuracy is terrible, it eats batteries, and the transmitter signal is so weak a light breeze will disrupt it (before an electrical engineer jumps in to correct me—please take the figurative decription, not the literal). Did I mention how the computer hates water, be it sweat, rain, or even the moisture from your breath? Finally, forget about the 5 year warranty VDO advertises. I received one polite email from the manufacturer after I sent an email to customer support. The rep told me the computer module was defective and would be replaced under warranty. After that point, no follow up or response to queries. Did the company go out of business? Fortunately, the company I purchased the item from, Bike Nashbar, is a first class operation and agreed to accept the return.

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star No good to me on the ground!
This computer has a nice display, lots of functions, and an easy interface. Setup is moderately good, not as easy a system from sigma. But, hit a pothole in the road, and this thing literally jumps off the bike due to a poor handlebar clip design. Requires duct tape for permanent installation. Overall, no good if it can’t handle the ride.

4 Stars bike computer
Received the bike computer and am well satisfied with it. The only thing neg. it didn’t have a battery installed and the info sait that it did…Alton Hale

4 Stars Nice Easy to read
The display on this computer is large and easy to read with most of the data on display at the same time. If you are looking for a low cost bike computer with lots of functions this one is working well for me.

3 Stars Pretty good
Did not have temperature. Other than that seems good. I use it for time and speed mostly. Has lasted longer than my last one.

5 Stars My favorite cycle computer
I love this computer. I really wanted a 4-line screen for a reasonable price. I already had a wireless one with 4 lines on my other bike, but I like the screen layout on this one so much better. Line 1 has the current speed. Line 2 shows the ride time. Line 3 shows the ride distance. These first three lines are static and never change. Line 4 can cycle through the clock, average speed & max speed, and odometer. So, in one screen, I get all the info I really need. The screen is clear and easy to read. The mount is pretty good too – it comes with three different sized rubber shims so you should be able to get it to fit pretty much any handlebar width. I installed this on a 2008 Fuji Roubaix which I think just has standard-sized road drop handlebars. Installation was pretty easy, although not as easy as a wireless computer since you have to deal with the excess connecting wire. This is really no big deal, and it will pay off long term since you only have to worry about 1 battery, instead of the 2 on a wireless system. Plus, since it’s wired, I never have to worry about interference if I’m riding with friends. Don’t waste your money on the 2-line screens from the more popular brands that are more money. This one does everything you need!

I was surprised to read some of the other drawbacks mentioned in other reviews:

1) the battery connection is not tight, and keeps resetting the settings. I have not had this problem over the 2-3 months I have owned it.

2) The push button makes it too easy to reset the timers. I don’t have a problem with this, but can see how this might be a problem. To change the display screen, you have to push the whole computer forward. A quick push, and Line 4 changes to a different statistic. If you hold it forward during a push for about two secs, it will reset the ride distance and timer. While sitting still, this will never be a problem. But, while riding, I can see how it might be easy to hold it too long, and accidentally reset the timers. On the flip side, I never need to switch the display screen since the main screen has all the facts I need (current speed, ride time, ride distance, clock).

3) Computer falls out of mount after hitting big bumps. I have mine on a road bike, so I’m not really hitting major bumps. I can’t gauge how it would hold on a mountain bike that is hitting all kinds of nasty terrain. But, I will admit that the way the computer sits in the harness is not really well done. Planet Bike should probably redesign this to have some kind of latch that the user has to bend to remove the computer.

Bottom line: I highly recommend this computer.
