3 Stars directions?
instructions could be a lot better. especially for those who have never purchasd one before. after several hours of messing w it seems to work fine

4 Stars Nice
Overall a pretty nice, simple little computer. Be warned that it will not look like the picture. The current design doesn’t look as nice and the button is mounted on the top instead of the side. I can’t really complain though, the price was good and it functions really well. The directions could be clearer I guess, but it’s worth the money. Clocking up the miles on the odometer is nice motivation to keep going!

4 Stars simple and straightforward
This product is a great value: it works as advertised, and is simple to install and operate.

4 Stars nice for the price
Can’t complain about this odometer for the price. Easy to install even for a girl. Nice big readout. One problem which I won’t blame on the item, if you wear glasses with poloroid feature, it makes a rainbow affect on the display screen that makes viewing the bottom half of the screen difficult.

5 Stars I Love It
Functions as a odometer, speedometer, trip meter and clock. It also shows maximum speed. In other words, all the basic functions you need.

The device works by counting the number of times a magnet attached to a spoke of the wheel passes a probe. This is converted into speed and distance with the aid of the diameter of the wheel. The diameter can be specified in centimeters.

Instructions were a little stretchy. It took me a while to figure out how to change the mode from km/h to mph and set the diameter of the wheels. A helpful chart is provided in the instruction to convert the specification of your bike tire to centimeter.

Once the device was installed and programmed, everything worked as expected.

For the cyclist that likes to track climbing feet even if it’s small rolling hills, it still adds up. Cycling functions include: current/average/max speed, ride time (total bike 1/bike 2/bike 1+2),Trip (total bike 1/ bike 2/ bike), 2nd programmable trip distance and stopwatch. Altimeter functions include: Current, maximum and average altitude and gradient. Current temperature, maximum altitude, total feet climbed (total bikes 1/bike 2/ bike). Also, home altitude is adjustable with a quick recalibration feature. Additional features include auto start / stop, a service interval indicator (programmable), 5 Year warranty.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Compact unit, lots of info
I got this computer to replace my recently-defunct Avocet 50, one of the earliest bike computers with an altimeter. The Avocet had a single display with big numbers and only two buttons: it was quite simple.

In comparison, this VDO has a wealth of information, but to display it all requires much smaller numbers and three buttons. So of course there are pluses and minuses: the small numbers can display a lot of info at once but are hard to read when the light is dim (I ride a lot at twilight). It’s hard to remember which buttons to press to find the display you want. And two of the buttons are side buttons, which IMHO are much less convenient than buttons on the front (top) face.

Another minor plaint: the documentation is unnecessarily printed in micro-type, and is not especially easy to follow.

But overall, it’s a positive: the gradient feature is nice even if it may not be too accurate, and the ability to switch between two bikes obviates the need to have two computers.

The altimeter function increments by one meter at a time (the Avocet’s minimum step was four meters or ten feet) which suggests rather incredible resolution in their barometric strain gauge, but it works. The unit appears to be well made.

5 Stars Highly Accurate VDO Cyclometer
I’ve had this unit for about 6 weeks and have found it to be very accurate for all of the usual key metrics: Distance, Ride Time, etc.

I really bought this unit for the altimeter functions. It took me a while to learn my way around the unit and find all of the features. Based on riding a marked and measured century in San Diego County on my 2nd ride, I found distance, elevation gain, incline %, max. elevation, and actual elevation at several marked locations on the ride to be extremely accurate (elevation within 4′).

My only complaint is that there is so much data jammed into the display that I can’t really see some of the smaller type. I usually wear reading glasses, and can still read everything if I am stopped, but “at speed” you don’t want to be studying the display too closely, lest you run into something.

Based on my research, the price at BikeSomewhere was the lowest by quite a few dollars. I bought directly from their website (sorry Amazon, I found out later that you had the link too) and shipping was free. Now, I’m going to buy a 2nd mounting bracket and sensor so I can set it up on my MTB bike as well. Which reminds me that the unit allows you to preset 2 bikes and keep track of mileage and elevation gain separately for the 2 bikes.

4 Stars All was as expected
All was as expected from the seller. As far as the product goes, I wish it had a better mounting system.

5 Stars Cyclecomputing,…… with an altimeter!
I’ve used an Avocet 50 for about the last 15 years. It still works but the new VDO altimeter is much more sophisticated. I can recommend it.

Pros: Lots of functions, works well, easy to mount and use. The mileage to 2 decimal places,.. hundredths of a mile is great! But,…

Cons; I’m seldom interested in my speed, usually I already pretty well know it. As a tourist, I watch mileage very close. The speed is in big numbers but the mileage is difficult to read, numbers at the bottom of the screen are too small!

And the operation using all the keys to do one thing is too complex. Seems like another key and a simpler sequence would have been easier.

But,.. overall it does seem to be a good computer, I’ve already got about 250 miles on it and it has worked with no problems!

2 Stars Don’t like this computer
I’ve had several bicycle computers over the years, Cateye, Avocet, and Now the VDO. I’m very disappointed in the information the VDO gives. The current speed only gives 1/2 mph increments, and the average speed is in 10ths. Even my old cheap cateye had 1/100ths average speed and current speed in 10ths of a mile per hour.

The main problem is there doesn’t seem to be much information on the web about what the resolution of any of the computers on the market, It doesn’t even tell the resolution in the book so it was mounted on the bike before I knew what the score was.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Good value for money
Finally,I know exactly the distance I am going!Plus average speed max speed and time on the bicycle. The only non accurate display is the calories burnt.I wear a HRM and my number at the end is by far bigger! So don’t rely on this a lot….Easy to mount and use just a push of only one button.I like the cateye products. They look good and they are easy to use.

5 Stars Easy to install
I had no trouble installing on my bicycle. I compared to other computers and it was right within .2

4 Stars Nice little unit
Got this for my new bike. It’s wired and a breeze to install with the included zip ties. If you’re having issues with the installation go to the cateye website, where there are better instructions than what are included. Only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars is because the unit is smaller than I expected and it’s hard to read the smaller letters while you’re riding. Other than that, it works as advertised.

4 Stars cateye cc-vl810
Very nice little unit, easy to install.I would of gave it 5 stars, if not for the calorie counter being so inaccurate.Go to the website caloriesperhour.com and click on bike calories burned, the cateye is about 50 to 60 % off.

3 Stars You need really good eyes!
Probably this miny computer works well, but it’s too small and difficult to read …can you immagine to stop in the street and try to read the information you need?

The BC 1606L provides a better overview of the essential information during a ride by hiding the total accumulated functions and cadence if not installed. The backlight gives optimal readability of this information even in the dark. An integrated storage chip prevents the loss of set values during battery change as features such trip section counter, timer, and second wheel size are programmable. Dot Matrix display – clearer display through full text indication between values. Active mode without total values – total values faded while riding to enable better focusing on the necessary functions. Backlight – optimal readability even after nightfall.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars REAL NICE!
i did some research befor buying just any computer. i have a Specialized Hardrock Comp Disc mountain bike. it has a heavy duty frame thats made of thick squared tubing. because of this it was alittle hard to insatll the magnets and have them read properly due to the distance, they need to be pretty close. but im a clever dude and rigged it up perfect. not sure if the MPH is accurate yet but i will have that tested soon also. they cadence feature is cool too. it measures your pedal RPM, for some its worth having for road use but off road its just another extra sometimes used. so, the degree of difficulty of self install was the only reason i gave this product a 4 which is more like a 4.5 out of 5. well worth the money. buy it and have a pro install it if you can and tell them you got it as a gift. they get all testy when you dont buy there over priced models

3 Stars Good Value
The only thing I have to compare this to is a cheapy $8 one I had from Kmart many years ago. This Sigma 1606L has many more features including cadence which I use often. The data it collects per trip ( average speed, average cadence, max speed, trip time, trip distance) is saved so I can transfer it to a spreadsheet to track how I’m doing. It’s easy to remove from it’s base using a bayonet style attachment, which I have placed on the handlebar stem. I was not impressed when I saw how the parts mount to the bike, thin rubber O-rings loop around sensor and fork, or baseplate and stem to stay in place, but after 1000 miles on streets and bike paths everything has held together. It always shows current speed plus any other selected single feature, like cadence or time.

Why only 3 stars?

1) Lacks a scan feature, so I must push a button repeatedly to get to view the function I want. An auto scan feature would allow me to keep my hands on the grips where they belong.

2) The wiring is somewhat flimsy. Small gauge wire is subject to breaking if put under any stress.

3) Speed readout shows only the closest half mile interval, doesn’t show tenths. For example, it reads either 12.0 MPH or 12.5 MPH missing 12.1, 12.2,etc.

I am actually very happy with this nicely designed and low cost unit. Mine came with a second mounting for a second bike, data for which it tracks separately. After 8 months of use over many miles, it has served me well.

5 Stars Been using sigma for 7+ years…
I’ve used the Sigma 1600L and its predecessor the 1600. Sigma makes a great computer in the 1600 series. They keep track of two bikes wheels (thus two bikes) as well as two odometers and a combined odometer. Its great if you have two bikes because all you need is an extra mount and you are set. the cadence feature is an easy add-on, and not available in most computers at this prices. It has all the regular stuff… like actual and average speed, trip computers, etc.

5 Stars Great Unit!!!!!!!
I not only use this on my bicycle but adapted it to my motorcycle! Yep- it works great for that too! Easy to use, reliable, easy to read, easy to install. I would recommend it to anyone.

4 Stars Good Value, Easy to Use
Like the product…easy to read screen. Easy to go through the different functions. Easy to install.

Light works well but I wish it stayed on longer…(only for 3 seconds I believe). The buttons aren’t labeled at all so you have to get use to what button works for what.

4 Stars The best cyclo computer out there
Pros: Gives temperature, grade, altitude plus more

Cons: Altitude not always perfectly accurate but can be adjusted

I’ve had this computer for a few years and it’s always worked well.

5 Stars A more precise method for determining wheel size
This is a great cyclometer. One thing I learned while setting wheel size is to use the method of marking your front tire and the floor where they meet and moving forward through one revolution and precisely marking that spot on the floor/ground where the line on the tire hits its low point. HERE’S THE TIP: make sure you’re on the bike when you try this as that pressure will change the circumference of your tire! Also, it’s important to be on a uniformly hard surface, and make your line as straight as possible. My road bike tires are listed as 700x23C, which is 2133 cm (84″). When I measured without my weight on the bike I calculated 2118 cm (83 13/32″). With my weight on the bike, it measured 2103.4 cm (82 13/16″)!

4 Stars VDO review
I purchased the VDO MC1.0+

unfortunately the first unit had a bit of a problem.

The temperature reading was about 35 degrees higher than the actual temperature.

Let me say that Bikesomewhere really rocks they issued me an RMA and within the week I had my new unit. Thanks again for making the online buying experience very pleasant.

The setup was fairly straight forward on the computer. The install guide is all done with pictures so it’s easy to follow. I will say that they need to state which is up and which is down on the sending unit that you attach to your fork. The picture stinks and if you place it upside down the computer has a hard time detecting the signal.

The initial setup of the computer is fairly straight forward once you realize there is a 3rd button on the rubber piece that says MC1.0+

My only complaint and it’s a minor one is that setting the base elevation took forever. The digits move at only 10ft at a time. My elevation here in Colorado is 6800ft so it took a long time for the computer to get up to that value.

Once I got thru the defective unit, the physical installation and the calibration it was time to take a ride and see how well it all worked.

The trip distance time all worked as any normal bicycle computer. The temperature reading is nice to have.

The altimeter the real selling point on this device is very cool. I took it out on a familiar trail and it is very easy to read. there is a readout of %grade that changes as you climb it also records your steepest climb as well as your average climb grade. This all works great.

The computer also keeps a record of how many feet you have climbed for the trip and over all.

The computer recorded that I climbed 1500 feet for my ride and looking at some of the information I have on the trail this is very close to being the actual elevation gain.

So this product seems to work as advertised. I hope that the initial quality holds up to the test of time. I will try and update this review in a years time so you can see how it’s holding up.

Just a quick update on this product. I’ve had it for about 18 months and it has worked flawlessly. It has been nice seeing my elevation gains and incline grade. I have had to replace the batteries in the unit but other than it has been free from any kind of problems.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for altimeter features in a bike computer.

One nit picky thing is that the elevation that you are at is very large in the display taking up a lot of real estate, they should make that smaller IMHO. Its not all that important to know what your elevation currently is. I’m more intrested in how much I’ve climbed or what the grade is than knowing that.

3 Stars Wireless vulnerable to other signals
I’ve started biking again, and, living in San Francisco, I wanted an altimeter to see just how much up and down I was really doing. I also use my bike to commute, and was interested in tracking the daily distance over various routes.

My daily commute includes a trip on BART, and that, unfortunately, is for me the downfall of this device. It is somehow picking up speed readings from the train. Imagine my surprise when the first day I used it, I took it out of my pocket when I got out of the station, only to discover my top speed was 69mph. I suppose I could that to impress the chicks, but I’d rather know what I’ve done on the bike. I was equally surprised though to find that on the same trip, the altimeter was accurate to about 20′ (+- 5% overall), which I think is pretty good considering I had just traveled through a tube at 69mph a couple hundred feet below sea level.

I’ll probably trade it for the wired version. I really like the convenience and cleanliness of the wireless, but the reception from the BART totally screws up my trip/total distance and average/top speed. If I weren’t taking a train every day, (Or if I could just turn it off) I’d rank it higher… It seems to perform very well under normal conditions. Controls are easy to use, the numbers are readable and the layout is clean while showing a lot of information in a small package. The only real negative for me, besides the wireless interference, is that there is has no backlight, and I’m often riding in the dark, but this is minor… I can read it ok when passing under a streetlight. Also, speed is measured in .5 increments (not tenths). I don’t mind this, but it seems to annoy some people in other reviews I’ve read.

If you’re not taking BART, (and you’re probably not), it seems to be an accurate and reliable instrument at a decent price.

4 Stars VDO MC1.0+ Works as Designed
I purchased this advanced bike computer because I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and like to know the gradients, temperature, and altitude, features only available on the more expensive models.

It does everything advertised with high accuracy. Note that because it’s wireless it can accumulate mileage when not in use, if it comes in proximity of an electronic disturbance, although it’s a rare occurrence.

The only minor quibble I have is the shiny area around the display, which glares in the bright sun, and the awkward button positions.

Overall, I think it’s the best bike computer of its class available today.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Very functional, remembering configuration sequences can be a challenge
This is my first cycling computer and I’ve been happy with it. I’ve owned it for about 4 months and have done dozens of rides with a total of over 400 miles on the odometer. It is easy to ride and switch between the different viewing modes and is easy to read even in sunlight.

This product is very functional and works as advertised. I really like the “auto start” mode where the odometer and elapsed time start automatically when wheel rotation is detected. Without it I would forget to restart the timer often.

As noted in other reviews the various combinations of button pushes are a bit cryptic and take some practice getting to remember. I’ll eventually dig out the manual again to figure out how to set the time to DST … or maybe I’ll just wait until the time is right again! Actually, the one that bugs me the most is the “trip meter reset” which I usually end up having to try two or three different times to get it right.

The one feature I wish it had was an “cycle through modes” option where the values displayed would automatically cycle through the secondary display modes (avg speed, max speed, elapsed time, trip, odometer) without having the press a button on the unit.

4 Stars Great cycle computer.
I have purchased my second Astrale 8 and although others were available, I wanted the same thing for my wife. We are currently working out together on 2 trainers (Colorado Winter).

I have put over 2300 miles on mine and it has served me quite well. I gave it one star short because I wish the screen titles could have been made with a larger font. Still, you learn what the settings are vs. trying to read them. I’m still using the same battery!

The unit is easy to remove when leaving the bike unattended.

I would let your installer know if you are using a trailer. They may need to adjust the sensor mounting so that you can attach and remove the trailer without disturbing the unit sensor position.

The unit is well made, and as you can see, has given me excellent service.

3 Stars Nice bike computer with cadence and rear wheel function
I bought this computer at my local bike shop as I wanted one that measured cadence and could attach to the rear wheel to use with an indoor trainer (Cycle Ops Fluid 2). The setup was a bit challenging for me, but it always takes me twice as long to put things together. I had it on my bike and working in around 45 minutes. I think the attachment hardware could be designed better. The numbers are a bit too small to see easily with my 43 year old eyes. It does function well and is simple to reset and gives me all the numbers I need: speed, top speed, average speed, time of ride, cadence, and odometer. I think it is a bit overpriced. Overall I like it despite these minor issues. The bike shop staff told me that wireless units don’t have the range to attch to the rear wheel, so thats why I bought the wired version.

3 Stars 2 pluses, 1 minus
Plus number 1: It is a wired unit. That means you need not worry about interference with other gadgets, including a heart rate monitor.

Plus number 2: Has the really essential features (speed, elapsed time, cadence) at about as low a price as you can find. Not counting heart rate though.

Plus number 3: This is common to several Cateye products I’ve bought. I wish they would not try so hard to keep the weight down when it comes to the mounting parts & for some products, the shell / casing. They use a black plastic of some sort that just ain’t that robust.

5 Stars Review: Cateye CC-CD200 Bike Computer
A good basic Bicyle computer (with cadence) for the price. It provides the basic information of speed, trip distance, overal distance, cadence and more for a reasonable price.
