User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Good value for money
Finally,I know exactly the distance I am going!Plus average speed max speed and time on the bicycle. The only non accurate display is the calories burnt.I wear a HRM and my number at the end is by far bigger! So don’t rely on this a lot….Easy to mount and use just a push of only one button.I like the cateye products. They look good and they are easy to use.

5 Stars Easy to install
I had no trouble installing on my bicycle. I compared to other computers and it was right within .2

4 Stars Nice little unit
Got this for my new bike. It’s wired and a breeze to install with the included zip ties. If you’re having issues with the installation go to the cateye website, where there are better instructions than what are included. Only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars is because the unit is smaller than I expected and it’s hard to read the smaller letters while you’re riding. Other than that, it works as advertised.

4 Stars cateye cc-vl810
Very nice little unit, easy to install.I would of gave it 5 stars, if not for the calorie counter being so inaccurate.Go to the website caloriesperhour.com and click on bike calories burned, the cateye is about 50 to 60 % off.

3 Stars You need really good eyes!
Probably this miny computer works well, but it’s too small and difficult to read …can you immagine to stop in the street and try to read the information you need?

3 Stars Good basic computer. .
The Velo-5 is just what I needed. Basic stuff like time, distance, odometer, and speed. Installing it is easy and quick. One problem is the magnet. The flap that holds the magnet in place is plastic and does tend to slip once in a while. So before every ride I make sure the plastic flap that holds the magnet is tight.

Next item that I have a problem with is the manual. The visuals are for the Velo-8 not the Velo-5. But that’s no big deal. The font size is TERRIBLE!. For guys like me, over 59, use a magnifier or you’ll get a headache. Mr. Product Manager, PLEASE put a copy of the manual on the web in at least 10 point font so folks like me can read the darn thing.

All in all an ok product.

4 Stars Nice little device
I intended to purchase a wireless model, but mistakenly bought this wired version. The wiring was really easy, and really doesn’t interfere.

Nice little device. Easy to operate.

2 Stars Quality leaves a lot to be desired
I purchased the VELO-5 at my local bike shop about a week ago. I had had a computer in the past on a different bike; I don’t remember the model, but I bought it at Walmart for $10 or so. I was hoping that a major bicycle accessories company would have a slightly more reliable product.

When I opened the package, I was mildly disappointed; the computer, sensor, and wire were mounted via plastic cinch strips, instead of proper mounting brackets, like the cheap computer I’d last used. Nevertheless, I installed it as indicated in the directions; I had no trouble with the sensor and computer unit, but when I attempted to install the spoke-mounted magnet I immediately stripped the threads on the cheap plastic “bolt” that holds it in place. I wasn’t using a pair of pliers, just my fingers. In the end I was able to get it reasonably secure, until I started riding and it immediately slide on the spoke to the rim and the sensor couldn’t pick it up. After a few miles, the magnet loosened itself up and flew off the wheel into the woods.

Luckily, I discovered I still had the all-metal magnet/bolt from the old computer I had, and put that on. Worked like a charm.

I wouldn’t suggest buying the Velo-5 unless you already have a spoke-mounted magnet lying around that you can use. The computer itself works great; it’s accurate, even at low speeds (a major problem for the cheapo Kmart computer I had), and the single-button operation couldn’t be simpler to use. If they’d start using a metal backer on the magnet, I’d give it 5 stars.

4 Stars A good, basic piece of equipment…
A simple straightforward piece of equipment. Does all the basic functions well. Easy to install, It fit my large-frame Trek bike with no problems. I would have liked another 12″ of cable to wrap the line a bit more, but it was adequate. Both the sensor and readout mount solidly with supplied cable ties. They provided enough cable ties, though I used a few extra I had laying around the house. Easy to read… even with my aging eyes. I’m a regular rider and can’t imagine why most riders would need to spend more for a higher-end model. Delivery was suprisingly fast via USPS… about 4 days as I recall to Maryland.

4 Stars A basic bike computer.
I am an older casual bike rider and ride only on bicycle trails in my local area. The Velo 5 was easy to install and seems to work well. The print on the instructions is small for someone with old eyes, but that is not their fault. This is a good basic computer for an ocassional bicyclist.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Very Good-amazing customer service too.
I too was surprised by the size and now that it’s warmed up a bit in Ohio took it out for a daylight trial. It’s really not impossible for my older eyes to read without glasses at all. But the icons denoting the current display…fahgeddaboutit. Besides, I have the order memorized so if I see a black blob in the third space, then hey, there’s my distance…which is again, legible.

The bike shop installed it for me but it’s true the instructions may leave one wanting. It seems like the shop set it for the right size tire, but the distance was too low my first ride. I upped it and now it reads correctly. I love the one finger ‘click-through’ method it offers. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to customize which of the 8 readings we wanted at the top in large fonts!!? (I’d prefer distance in the ‘big screen’. It has a pretty large sensor zone attached to the front fork and honestly, mine is only at the 1/4″ distance from it when the spoke with the magnet on it is a hair widths from being past it. The center of the sensor zone or the entire sensor piece, doesn’t need to be 5mm, just at some point of the magnet passing the thing, it should come fairly close. And even though the sensor’s only about an inch wide, that much movement of a spoke, (tire rotation), changes the distance a lot.

I didn’t find programming it that hard at all. Pita a bit, but not hard. But am concerned about how hard it is to remove from the bracket….but that may change soon. While wanting to relocate it to a different bar space this morning, I loosened the nut and pull apart. The end of the stiff plastic strap broke right off. Called cust service via their 800# on their site, (couldn’t find it on the instuction paper), and a human answered in Colorado after only a one time button push for dept. choice.

I told him I’m sorry, but haven’t registered it yet. Just installed it but purchased Jan 09. He’s pleasantly said, ‘No problem at all, those stiffer type straps have been replaced on the newer made models and I’ll send out the whole bracket assembly so you’ll be good to go.’ Now, you can’t beat that. Japanese company through and through, but the N. American office is really there for ya when you need them…and that’s what counts.

3 Stars Distance
Front fork speed sensor ?Transmission distance up to 70cm – 27 inches, which I got my set a 27″ and still flashing which mean the two sensors are too far apart. My handlebar is set more than the 27″ limit, so this keep flashing, but seem to work for now.

5 Stars AWESOME!
this is a great computer! super easy to install and calibrate to your bike.(took me 10 minutes) i’ve used it a few times this winter, and it is extremely accurate and easy to use. has all the functions you will need with the exception of cadence. love the fact that it’s wireless too! no wires to detract from the look of my carbon fork. looking forward to many miles ofsatisfaction from this computer.a great value for the $$!

4 Stars pleased but
good product mounts could be better batteries were all but dead on arrival still a good choice

2 Stars it’s a headache to set up
This item is often installed by bike shops who are presumably familiar with the product. I found the microscopic instructions to be both hard to read and hard to understand.

After I finally figured out that the item did not work locating the warranty claim information in the multi-language multi-page newspaper sized tissue paper enclosure was an additional frustration.

This item may be no worse than others but for a guy who made it through graduate school wading through the printed matter kicked my butt.

The instruction is very lousy. In order to set a selection, one has to use a pin to poke into a small hole at the back of the unit. And please be very careful, if you poke a bit hard you will destroy the little rubber reset button (and no where in the instruction one can find such a warning).

My boy (15) destroyed the unit in the first attempt, and I help him to install the second unit, that we exchanged from the store. I gave it one star.

5 Stars Well worth the price
This item is also listed under: Cateye CC-VL510 5-Function Bicycle Computer, where you will find additional product reviews. I belive this listing to be a more recent product style offering.

Unfortunately, I did not buy this product through Amazon. I chanced upon one in a local bike shop, and bought it only for the Speedometer/Odometer functions, in addition to the bike shop owner’s claim that the unit is virtually waterproof.

In my initial opinion, the shop price was in line with my expectations for something that would only serve as a speed/od-ometer.

Packaging is small but relatively sturdy, so the couple times that I dropped the package didn’t bother the device a bit. It’s easily opened without lacerating your hands to the bones and tendons, or loosing a quart of blood. (Thank You, CatEye, for not stooping to the idiotic packaging practices of your competitors.)

The kit contents are simple and straight-forward:

7 – Black Nylon Wire Ties

1 – Wire/Flat Spoke Magnet

1 – Mount/Wire/Reed Switch Assembly

1 – Multi-lingual instruction sheet

and the VEL05 Cyclocomputer module, of course

Installation isn’t a big deal, once you get over trying to decipher the pictorial instruction sequences (I would rather have words, but that’s my idiosyncrasy).

The nylon wire ties I received in my package were just a bit too brittle to cinch-down completely without breaking, so I dipped-into my Ty-Wrap inventory. If you don’t have some black nylon wire ties on hand, it would be a good idea to have a few extras on hand when you get around to installing this, or any similar, product.

I would have preferred a clamp-mount for both the cyclocomputer module mount and the reed switch (“sensor”) hunk of plastic but, the cost of the unit probably relegates bar clamps and brackets to optional parts ordering status.

Five extra inches worth of wire would also have been nice between the mount and the reed switch, to allow for routing around a front fork shock, but this was not a deal-breaker. I simply had to settle-for what I think is a less than optimal (for me) placement of the display.

Mounting the magnet is deceptively simple, although I’m really not sure if the wire spoke should be leading or trailiing the magnet as it rotates. I installed mine according to the pictorial diagram, with the spoke trailing the magnet, but will reverse it if the magnet starts twisting around the spoke.

Setting-up the unit was not the nightmare I had anticipated. CatEye made intelligent use of the only two buttons you have available to you–so well that I had the unit configured in less than 10 minutes. Tire circumferences from 100cm to 299cm are possible, with the default setting at 205cm. My roll-measurement gave me a 206cm for my front tire, meaning that I only had to bump-it-up one from the default–surprisingly easy to do.

Clock setting was also quite simple, but I am somewhat put-off by the fact that, although a 24 hour clock mode is available, it’s only available if the speed/odo is set to readout in units of Km. I agree that Km makes more sense, but I’m keeping pace for a family, and the kids are not going to grok Kilometers as intuitively as they do Miles, for rates and distances. I “suffer” with the 12-hour clock, and answer questions in Mph and miles.

If you need to change tire sizes, you can do so easily from the “Odo” display mode. If you need to toggle between Mph and Kmph, you will need to do a full “All Clear” reset of the unit, before you are offered the choice between Mi and Km as units of measurement. This might bother some folks. It just leaves me wondering why they decided to do it that way.

Display interpretation is straightforward.

I have Speed, in Mph, as my largest and topmost figure (easy to see).

Below that, I can toggle through displaying:

Trip Distance – [Dst] – (0.00 to 999.99 units)

Maximum Speed – [Mx] – (0.0 to 299.9 Km/h or 185.0 Mph)

Total Distance – [Odo] – (0.0 to 9999.9 units)

Clock – [Clock Icon] – You know how to read one

It does what I want it to do, and pretty-much only what I want it to do (the clock was a bonus, as far as I’m concerned), without any “blue incantations” to get at the info I want, and without moving my hands from the handle bar grips.
