User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Nice unit–good value
It works very well and has a nice feature set. Fairly easy to read during the ride, but not that easy to be riding and switching functions. Three functions are displayed at one time, and usually thats enough for me. Most of the cumulative readings and averages I can check after the ride or at lights. Make sure you use one of the two rubber adapters for the handle bars and don’t just strap it on. It will fit, but without the rubber adaptor it will slide up and down a lot. Nice color and comes with a clearish cover if you prefer. Seems to be very accurate, and was easy to install. The directions were complete and understandable. Amazon, as always, rocks.

1 Star don’t get it wet
I already didn’t like this unit. The semi-english instructions sounded like they might be helpful if you already knew what they were trying to tell you. The lapping features were hard to use and didn’t tell me what I wanted to know (as in, how long did that last lap take?). And I had to have the sending unit replaced (thank goodness for the friendship of The Bike Shop). So I was grudgingly getting along with the thing until I rode with it in the rain. Corroded the contacts, and when I made headway getting those back, the buttons failed. Yep, this was my first bike puter. I guess I expected too much of it.

3 Stars Vetta Bicycle Computer
Fairly good computer overall. Setup is tricky. Make sure you follow the instructions very carefully. To reset the maintenance timer, you need to go through the whole setup routine each time. Would not recommend to a friend.

3 Stars Hard to install
Hard to install. Take it to a bike shop and let the professionals do it.

1 Star Save your money – nice idea, poor execution
I wanted a combination HRM /computer for my bike and this seemed to fit the bill. It is a waste of money. First, the HRM is completely erratic. I use electrode cream and keep the strap fairly tight with the electrodes positioned properly. When I get a HR signal – it can go from 45 -> 70 -> 150 -> 60 -> 0 all in a few minutes. I thought maybe they had programmed in a random number generator the way it was going. Totally useless. Most often it just cuts out totally and goes to 0 for 15 – 20 minutes for no obvious reason.

The display itself is the other problem. It is VERY dim and impossible to read if you are in shade with sunglasses on. I’ve been able to read many other bike displays under the same conditions, but this one seems very dim, with no contrast. It reminds me of how other LCDs look right before the batteries die. Except the batteries I have in it are brand new.

The SLEEP function does not work. It is NOT automatic. You need to manually put it to sleep when you want that. There is a description of how to do this on Cateye’s site in the knowledge base. This is ridiculous. Supposedly it goes to sleep if there is absolutely no RF signals in the atmosphere. So I guess if you bike in Antarctica or somewhere desolate like that it might work, but not where most of us ride.

Finally the mounting is clever, but you MUST mount it where Cateye wants you to or forget it. You must mount it to the right of the stem with the unit in front of the handlebars. So if you have aero bars it won’t mount properly.

And Cateye has no real tech support. They only accept email, however those are not answered. (Believe me, I’ve sent them several). So there is no one to talk to or to try to fix things. I’ll NEVER buy Cateye again.

2 Stars Auto-shutoff doesn’t work
This computer has nice display that will show all of the information I’m interested in. However, the sensors are much more prone to interference than the other products I’ve used. The heart rate monitor is very sensitive to power lines — the big lines on the metal towers mess up both this unit and my Polar watch/HRM, but this unit fails in many other places where my Polar has no problems. Also, the sensors hang from the chest strap and get unclipped too easily. The wireless signal from the wheel sensor is also a problem — there are two places on my normal routes where this computer loses the signal for a while. I’ve never had that problem with my other (much cheaper) wireless computer.

A stem mount would have been nice. With my aerobars clipped on to my handlebar, I’ve got nowhere to mount my computer properly.

Finally, the biggest frustration is with the auto-shutoff. Like every other computer I’ve had, this is supposed to turn itself off after several minutes of inactivity. Unlike every other computer I’ve ever had, this one simply won’t shut itself off 9 times out of 10. I’ve tried taking it off the mount and storing it other places, thinking that maybe there’s some source of interference in my garage that’s keeping the computer on, but nothing seems to help. I’ve resorted to removing the batteries at the end of a ride.

User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars Great concept…a little flawed in the application
The “torpedo” concept for the wireless sensor is very clean and straightforward. It has some promise, but Vetta needs to make some modifications in the length of the sensing arms. As they are now, the arms are too long and do not fit anything close to what I would consider “typical” distance between the chainstay of a bicycle and the rear wheel spokes and crankarms. Because the arms are too long, they cannot be arranged where they pick up the magnets on the wheel or crankarm for consistent rotational measurement. I even had to glue a rare earth magnet I bought separately to my bicycle’s crankarm for cadence measurement because the magnet included with the cyclocomputer in no manner could fit the space between the crank and the chainstay. Vetta needs to think about the design and re-engineer the sensing arms before I would give a recommendation.

1 Star piece of junk
Set it up and it worked for one two hour bike ride. The next morning, it no longer worked.

1 Star does not work
I bought this item and it would not shut off. It ran the battery down. Vetta sent me two others. The second would not shut off either. The third, the torpedo would not shut off. Vetta was helpful but it does not work.

1 Star Missing parts
This item was missing parts when I purchased it. Its repacement does not work. Heart monitor does not work at all… the computer itself is extremely unreliable. It actually only measures bicycle speed 10 percent of the time or so and is only useful as a clock and timer. In my opinion Vetta computers are worthless expensive junk. A $10 Schwinn computer I bought works all the time without any problems.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Mounting system is not good but the computer is great!
The computer is great, it has a lot of functions and features and the wireless works very well. The only thing I was dissapointed was the mounting system, it is with nylon ties while the Strada Wireless has the “FlexiTight” Bracket Mount which has a faster installation. Besides if I need to switch it to another bike is faster and I don’t need to have spare nylon ties with me.

4 Stars Good but could be great
This unit is very accurate and I am satisfied so far with the purchase. There are two things that disappointed me.

1. No Temperature sensor, I knew before purchasing this unit it did not have a temperature sensor which is disappointing. You would think paying a premium for a bike computer would include this, as most of the cheap computers at wal-mart include this.

2. No scan mode. I was really surprised that this was not included. I thought it was a standard feature on most bike computers but after re-reading through cat-eye’s website it appears that most of the models do not include this. Instead you have to push the button every time to change between the readouts. This is a bit difficult to do while riding and paying attention to your surroundings. I just leave it on the trip odo. now. This was the biggest disappointment with the unit so far.

Overall I would recommend the computer, just a little disappointed that basic features are not included in a premium bike computer

5 Stars Excellent product
Very difficult to find something better for this price. Easy to install and works perfect.

5 Stars Great Cyclo-Comp, weatherproof and reliable.
This is a great product and I am 100% satisfied with it. I have been using it moderately for 3 years now, and it has held up without flaw through rainstorms, winter storage, and I only replaced the battery last week, so you don’t consume packs of button-cells every month. The onboard lighting system is perfect for night riding, and the speed is accurate and helpful. All of the functions, including the multiple trip counters, are useful and you can use all of them to plot your progress when you are training.

My only complaint would be the the signal range is somewhat weak. Although it is fine between the front wheel fork and the handlebars, I tried to mount it near the rear wheel to hide it on my new Gary Fisher road bike, but it wouldn’t transmit through my body while I was on the bike.

Overall a great product which I would highly recommend.

4 Stars confusing instructions-great product!
First, thank you for your fast turn-around on this item. the cateye micro cyclocomputer is first rate. the operation is straight-forward and simple.

all functions perform as advertised and the accuracy is excellent. getting through the set-up instructions was the most difficult aspect of operation although that wasn’t really too bad either. I use the bike for my daily commute (4.5 mi. each way) and keeping track of mileage, top speed, average speed and elapsed time adds interest to the ride. I really like the wireless feature most of all. Overall a great product!
